Danafilms adds another 7-layer coextrusion line

Danafilms Expands with another Coextrusion Line

By year’s end, Danafilms will double both the size of its Franklin, Kentucky manufacturing facility and its coextrusion muscle.

By year’s end, Danafilms will double both the size of its Franklin, Kentucky plant and its coextrusion muscle. For more than 40 years, Danafilms’ success has been driven by three simple fundamentals: innovation, integrity, and investment in resources. To this end, Danafilms will soon complete two significant investments—doubling the size of its Franklin, Kentucky plant and the installation of another 7-layer coextruded film line—just the next step forward in their continued growth to ensure successful custom film manufacturing well into the future.

“We’ve been bordering on expanding versus not expanding for some time,” says Steve Crimmin, sales manager at Danafilms. “But when we looked at the current state of the recovering economy—when manufacturing is increasing—we saw that this investment would be prudent. This was the perfect time to go ahead with a plant expansion.”

Crimmin says the expansion, which should be completed in September, will also provide much-needed warehousing space for raw materials and outbound orders alike. “In the future this additional plant capacity will provide space for more film lines,” says Crimmin. “This sets us up for the future very well.”

Shortly after Danafilms moves into its new plant space in Franklin, the company will add a 7-layer coextruded blown film line from Windmoeller & Hoelscher (W&H). Although coextruded films aren’t new to Danafilms—it has offered multiple-layer films since 2005—the company recognizes what coextrusion means to its own success and that of its customers. “We see new, significant growth going into the coextrusion direction,” says Crimmin. “We’re looking at a number of different avenues to capitalize on this growth, and this new line is one way of doing just that.”

Highlights of the new 7-layer film line, to be installed at the Franklin plant in November, include:

An automatic gauge control system, which monitors and corrects the thickness of the film as it exits the die, keeping the product in extremely tight tolerances.

An internal bubble cooling (IBC) system, which increases throughput and ensures the extruder can keep pace with increasing demand.

A gravimetric blending system, which mixes resins by weight to maintain more accurate resin proportions than if resins were measured and blended by volume. Blend accuracy translates into better film appearance and performance in a printing press, bag- or pouch-making machine and other downstream processes.

An oscillating haul-off which helps produce film with excellent lay flat characteristics for good machinability in our customers' equipment.

“Gauge control, oscillating haul-off and other innovative technologies support our goal of staying on the leading edge and keeping ahead of our competition,” says Crimmin. “Our philosophy has always been to reinvest in the latest technology and our expert team in order to provide the best custom film possible to each customer.”

Before the new W&H line arrives in the fourth quarter of this year, it will first be demonstrated at the K Show, an international trade show for the plastics and rubber manufacturing industries. This year’s show will be held Oct. 27-Nov. 3 in Dusseldorf, Germany. “This is the first time that our group has ever been to the K Show, and we’re very excited about what we plan to see,” says Crimmin. Danafilms will be represented at the K Show by general manager Alan Simoncini, coextrusion technical manager Aaron LaPointe, and Franklin plant manager Dan Lowdermilk.
