Full Blown Experience after 40 Years

Danafilms Newsletter - February 2010

danafilms blown film lineIt’s been forty years since Sherman Olson took $15,000 in start-up capital to build his first two film production lines out of angle iron and spare parts. He knew what he was doing, one step at a time. During that first year Sherm worked 14 hour days running two lines, building a third line, and making sales calls. His initial investment is still working for him, and so is the Danafilms philosophy:

1. Keep it as simple as possible whenever possible.
2. Success depends on providing the best quality and service in the industry.
3. Invest profits back into state-of-the-art equipment and top-notch personnel.

By 1977 Danafilms moved to a new 19,000 square foot location in Westborough, Massachusetts. Ten years later, we doubled our space. And in 2000 we opened a second state-of-the-art manufacturing site in Franklin, Kentucky, expanding our capacity to 40 million pounds. Today both plants are ISO 9001-2008 certified; we have a sophisticated film analysis laboratory and can produce up to seven-layer co-extruded film structures. By wasting nothing, Danafilms continues to grow.

Alan Simoncini joined Danafilms in 1974 and worked his way from a machine operator to General Manager.  “We are committed to steady growth. Our customers count on us to look forward, to provide fast delivery, reliability and expanded capabilities. We're even exploring a 50,000 square feet addition and another co-extrusion line at our Kentucky facility,” Alan reports. “We will make that decision by early 2010.

“We understand the challenges facing this industry. It’s an age of consolidation where big companies are fighting for market share. To increase value for our customers and employees we continue working leaner and smarter than ever. By expanding our lines we give our solid work ethic more room to grow.

“What we do has a direct effect on the environment. Improving plastics and streamlining our process are consistently a top priority. Our scrap is already at its minimum. Finding new ways to reuse materials, while maintaining quality, is a challenge we accept and enjoy because we take sustainability seriously at every level. Making more for our clients with less material is our way of keeping it simple.

“Our Employee Stock Ownership Plan takes our best ideas farther. All members of our team see their contributions as an asset and a service. We are proud of our first 40 years at Danafilms because it gives us the momentum to work for the next generation of customers and employees.”

Sherman Olson, Founder and CEO, knows that making the best film and providing top-notch service is only possible with a long-term dedicated team and well-maintained state-of-the-art equipment.
