EvoSeal Film Boosts Barrier and Reduces Costs
Danafilms Newsletter - February 2010

In 2007, Danafilms developed a new innovative EVOH sealant film which combined several key attributes to support new markets. With ten times the oxygen/aroma barrier at a fraction of the cost, it replaced PVDC-coated PET. Now three new variations of the film have proven so popular we gave them a name: EvoSeal™
ApplicationsEvoSeal™ goes farther by making an ideal inner ply for laminated barrier films used in regular, stand-up, and zipper pouches in the food industry. The outside layer in these constructions is often a 48 gauge reverse-printed PET film while the inner layer of sealant is laminated on to protect printing. In the past, when an oxygen/aroma barrier was required, the outer PET film needed an expensive PVDC coating. With EvoSeal™, the PVDC coating can be eliminated completely.
We developed this solution as a practical alternative to PVDC-coated PET because we knew our customers could do without PVDC's downsides – more than just the fact that it can double the cost of film. By removing PVDC you get a clearer, less yellow, PET. Your graphics become sharper. Taking out PVDC also reduces odors and lead time, so the cost benefits keep growing. And, the new PET is safe for use in food packaging.
Savings for YouMoving from rigid to flexible packaging is one way smart packagers do just that. The transport, material handling, warehousing and shipping of rigid package containers contribute dramatically to the total cost of packaging as well as to carbon emissions. A single truckload of flexible packaging can replace 25 trucks of rigid packaging. Reducing shipping by a factor of 24 is as good for the bottom line as it is for the environment.
It’s efficient by providing ten times the oxygen barrier of PVDC-coated PET. This coextruded EVOH film integrates the barrier properties within the sealant layer. It seals at high production speeds through a variety of contaminants, including crumbs, food particles, moisture, grease and oil.
EvoSeal™ allows converters to reverse-print on inexpensive PET film for the outer layer, therefore reducing make-ready material costs significantly. From start to finish you now have a better performing end product that costs less.
Announcing EvoSeal™-PPTaking EvoSeal™ one step farther, we've formulated it to produce a lap seal with polypropylene. The advanced capability allows it to seal with the polypropylene as well as self-seal. EvoSeal™-PP offers superior results according to converters using this for pouch applications where it is already proving popular.

"Danafilms helped me develop a solution on a new piece of equipment using an EVOH sealant film to make inline standup pouches that require a lap seal to polypropylene. We've been buying it for nearly three years without any quality issues. Aaron LaPointe has been a good partner on this project. If I have questions, I can contact him directly. It's definitely an advantage to have face-to-face contact with someone on the technical side. The customer is happy now, and we're happy."

Another Innovation: EvoSeal™-MEvoSeal™ is now available in a formulation that can be metallized. Now it possible to simplify construction by changing from a three-ply lamination of reverse-printed PET/metallized PET/sealant film to a two-ply reverse-printed PET/metallized EvoSeal™. You eliminate a ply and perhaps a lamination pass, as well.
Applications like these keep us expanding. From trail mix to pet treat packages, from stand-up to reclosable zipper pouches — EvoSeal™ is a commercial success story all the way to the shelf.
